Direct reduced iron (DRI), also called sponge iron, is a premium ore-based metallic (OBM) raw material made by removing chemically-bound oxygen from iron oxide pellets and lump ores without melting.
DRI is high in iron content and low in copper and other undesirable metals, tramp elements, and nitrogen content. It is used to make a broad range of steel products…all types of sheets up to and including exposed auto body, extra deep drawing quality, fine wire, special bar quality, forging bar quality, plate and seamless tubes.
Application:
- Steel seamless tubes
- Exposed auto body sheet steel
- Steel wire & cable
Benefits of DRI
- Consistent quality and QA compared to scrap metal.
- Virtually free of residuals (Cu, Ni, Mo). Very low in sulfur.
- Continuous feed into electric arc furnace (EAF). Can be used to feed up to 100% for the required metallic after initial scrap charge.
- Reduces the need for batch charges, thereby increasing productivity and cost-efficiency. Can also be adapted to batch charges mixed up to 30% with scrap if necessary, where continuous feed is not possible.
